In the news: Audi of America has recently reported strong January sales results totaling to 6,399 vehicles. The said figure represents a 5.2% increase over the previous year and to date the best January sales in the company’s history.
According to Johan de Nysschen, Executive Vice President of Audi of America, Incorporated, “Audi has a great deal of momentum as we enter 2007. We’re coming off record sales in 2006, residual values on our new vehicles are, on average, the best in the luxury set, and the R8 sports car is generating a great deal of interest in the brand.”
He further stated, “2007 can be another great year for Audi and our customers. We have three significant launches, including the Audi TT Coupe and Roadster, the Audi R8 mid-engine sports car, and the Audi A5 coupe. We’re certainly looking to set another record this year.”
The January sales increase was due to the 11.8% increase sales of the A4 model line and the continuous strong results for the Audi Q7 which record 1,636 deliveries. Audi also saw its biggest growth in the Pacific Northwest region which posted a 60.7% increase over last year’s figures. The other Audi subsidiaries that have reported good sales are as follows: New Jersey with 44.9% sales, the Desert region with 43.3%, Los Angeles obtaining 41.2%, and Miami and Michigan with 37.5%.
Audi Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales have also increased for January totaling to 1,859 or a 5.7% increase over the previous year.
Aside from Audi’s remarkable January sale’s results, the automaker will also lunched its stunning new R8 sportscar which will surely become the star of the Audi stand at the upcoming Brisbane Motor Show 2007. The appearance of the R8 on the Brisbane Motor Show will be its second appearance since its debut in Australia last September.
To join the R8 on the Audio stand will be the recently launched S8, RS 4 Avant, RS 4 Cabriolet and the brand new Audi TT Coupe.
Audi Australia’s Managing Director, Joerg Hofmann said, “Since it was first unveiled, the R8 has received enormous attention from potential buyers and the public. To-date we have signed around 32 pre-orders for this extraordinary sports coupe.”
The R8 will be offered for limited sale only in Australia and will be launched in September this year. The pricing and specification are not yet confirmed but it is said that the car will have a price ranging around $250,000 to $300,000.

Audi Team to Compete in American Le Mans Series in Long Beach and Houston

It can be remembered that the Audi R10 TDI has gained a one-two victory in St. Petersburg Florida which simply shows that the revolutionary diesel-powered sportscar is also capable of winning on a street course. The circuits in Long Beach and Houston however have different traits compared to the tracks on St. Petersburg which means that the Audi Sport North America team is going to face additional challenges and it’s going to be big.
And speaking of challenges, the drivers as well as the technical crews need to master a particularly tough task in Long Beach and they have to do than before the qualifying race which gives the team as little as 45 minutes of practice to familiarize themselves with the new circuit. The race will only last for 1:40 hours making it as the shortest race in the history of the American Le Mans Series.
A week after the Audi Sport North America team will head to compete in the city circuit in Houston. Dindo Capello and Allan McNish are already familiar with the city circuit in Houston since this is where they have gained their victory last year using the Audi R8. However for Emanuele Pirro and Marco Werner the Houston circuit is a new territory. It is also expected that the Audi team will experience some problems during the race since the Houston circuit is considered to be the slowest one on the 2007 American Le Mans Series schedule with an extremely bumpy surface.
After the one-two victory that the Audi team has achieved in St. Petersburg there was very little time for the team to take a break. As the drivers flew back to Europe for some testing in France for the 24 Hours of Le Mans scheduled on June 16 to 17, the Dave Maraj’s Team Audi Sport North America on the other hand has three days remaining to prepare the two R10 TDI sports prototypes for the next race. And then as early as Thursday the trucks left the team’s base in Pompano Beach in Florida to travel the 2,700 mile distance across the United States to the West Coast.
It is the first time for Long Beach to host the American Le Mans Series. And for the Audi Sport team, this Houston race marks the return to a special venue. It should be noted that in the year 1988 Audi contested its debut race with the 200 quattro TRansAm after changing from rallying to circuit racing which happened on the street course near Los Angeles. And during that time, Audi caused a big sensation with its Quattro drive and just like its TDI powered sportscar that is making headlines in the United States.

Stiff competition for the BMW 3 series coupe, but can it compete with the BMW 650i, Jaguar XK or Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG? Possibly.
In any event, the Audi S5 is a sleek looking coupe, with a front end reminiscent of the R8, and a semi-fastback roof line, and just discernible swept lines up and over the front and rear wheels. It is a smart looking car, and one that will blend in well at the country club. Like almost all Audi designs, the S5 and A5 are smart, balanced designs with some neat features, but there is nothing shocking, nothing very exciting about the shape.
V-8 power, 354 bhp
But what about performance? Well, Audi has picked its V-8 to give enough power to see off many competitors, although this is not the most powerful version of this superb engine. For the S5 it is rated at 354 bhp at 7,000 rpm, with 325 lb ft (440 Nm) torque at 3,500 rpm, against the 420 bhp of the RS4.
So it is not as fast as it might be, but still packs plenty of oomph, taking the S5 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, which is true supercar territory, while top speed is limited to 155 mph. This really puts it up with some heavy metal, although it is nowhere as quick as the Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG, which has 480 bhp on tap from a massive 6.2 liter engine.
On the other hand, the straightline performance of the Audi A5 is slightly better than that of the BMW 650i and Jaguar XK, and up there with the likes of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage and Porsche 911 Carrera.
The V-8 is coupled to a six-speed manual box in the S5. More important, Audi has adopted a front:rear torque split of 40:60% for the center differential. This means that in the normal state the car will not understeer strongly like the front-biased split of some Audi quattros. This means the car will handle nearer neutral, which is good.
Also new is the double-wishbone front suspension and trapezoidal multi-link rear suspension which will ensure good tracking and handling.
